things that suck )

Now that that's out of my system...I don't like that I'm feeling so crabby and stressed-out lately. (Stress is partly financial, partly health, partly crap at work--and I don't mean the tape-and-scissor thief.) Friday is a "break day" (students and faculty get the day off), so I've decided to use a vacation day and have a three day weekend. Maybe I will work on some manga reviews, or putting doujinshi/special booklets in my database. Or maybe I'll just sit around and veg with the cats. I'm hoping having an extra day off will help my disposition.

Too bad I don't live close enough to work that I could go home at lunch and have a kitty snuggle. Here's my virtual kitty snuggle instead:

I was reading about a journal project where you take a picture every day and then write a little bit about it. It was supposed to be printed out pictures in an actual book, but I'm thinking posting it here will work just as well. I think it would be fun, and maybe give my mind something positive to focus on. Need to focus on the positive. Can't let dealing with crabby people make me crabby, too. Today I will think about Wednesday's soft, warm belly fur and try to be less crabby.

naval officer elizabeth

I don't know what I love more: the way Elizabeth is snugly perched on Junya's shoulder, or his hat with the fluffy white feather.

(PS - did we know Elizabeth was a boy? I can't believe I would have forgotten that, but it also seems weird that the author would choose to tell us that five volumes into the series.)

A couple weeks ago, when I was on my way home from work, a semi in front of me threw a retread. I didn't have time to react, so I ran over it.

Obligatory Kickstarter crying: I'm pretty sure I'm going to back Fleet. (Crab meeples!!! why am I so excited about this what is wrong with me also I really need to get Agricola. I don't even care what the game is like, I just need the animeeples.) I think I might need an intervention. Not only is my August budget in shambles, but I did my September budget today and wanted to cry. It's a good thing I go back to working full time next week, but dang, October seems a long way off right now.

It occurred to me the other day that I hadn't done a cat post in a long time, so let's fix that )
wednesday_10_00: (zuko - dork)
1. Found a wonderful way to fix the hideous new LJ comments (start here), which works beautifully on my computer at home, but of course I can install neither Stylish nor Greasemonkey on my ancient version of Firefox at work. /sighhhhh

2. We figured out our mice were going into the silverware drawer because that was the only one they could get into. (They would smell the food in the other drawers and keep trying, but couldn't get to them, I think.) Traps were set, two mice caught. RIP, mice. May you find bounteous peanut butter and run freely in the ceilings and drawers of mouse heaven.

[the rest of this post is unrelated to the previous post of miscellany]

I know what you're thinking. "I only see two cats in that picture...?" You have to remember that Choco sleeps under the covers. She's there, you just can't see her. (I know, I know, the bed looks too flat to be hiding a cat. Trust me, she's there.) My point is: these cats have not been this close since...um, EVER. All because my aunt and uncle brought their dog (a miniature pinscher who is outweighed by two of these chicken-cats) for a visit this weekend. Apparently my bed is safe from dogs, idk.

After multiple delays and mishaps, my 200 pounds (or whatever) of books and I are home safely. I am showered and refreshed and about to commence unpacking. More later when my right arm isn't about to fall off.

PS Wednesday overly affectionate, Choco standoffish, as per usual post-vacation behavior.

I don't actually know the answer to this question, but around 12:30 last night I discovered it's at least more than three. I ended up catching the thing in a bowl and taking it outside myself. (sheesh)

I seem to be all packed and ready to head off to Japan tomorrow. I didn't get around to posting all the requested reviews, but hey, it was a pretty good effort, for me? orz

Will try to post occasional updates while I'm there.

Wednesday (who likes to get involved in whatever I'm doing), joins me whenever I put in a workout video. Only this is her idea of working out:

...Best workout partner, or worst workout partner?

I actually meant to post this yesterday, but Scrapbook was still being wonky. Anyway, as long as I'm here: birthday plans today include a chair massage, shopping with the girls ([livejournal.com profile] mereflair and my mom), dinner (no diet at dinner! four cheese fondue and creamsicle drink [vanilla ice cream, vanilla vodka, orange soda] all the way!), and casino in the evening. Until this afternoon, though, I'm just going to laze around and hope my cramps go away, ow.

Or not, as the case may be. Let's compare two passages I have read recently:

From Rose Daughter, by Robin McKinley:

But Beauty was far too charmed by her not to make an effort, and she reached across her plate and offered Fourpaws the tips of her fingers. The fingertips were deemed acceptable, and the base of ears and a small round skull between were presented to be scratched. Beauty scratched. Fourpaws purred.

From Wicked, by Gregory Maguire:

He rolled over, tugging the blanket with him; she tugged it back. The air in the room was so cold it seemed clammy. Malky endured their thrashing legs to stay near them, to receive warmth, and to give whatever passes for affection in cats.

One of these is exactly how I would describe an interaction with a cat. The other made me roll my eyes.* My 300 pictures of cats snuggling up to me, let me show you them. (No really, I mean, I took this the morning after I read the offensive passage. Or maybe you prefer Choco, who sits next to me every morning while I have breakfast? Pumpkin, who adores my mom no matter how many pills she shoves down his throat?) If cats have never shown you affection, it's probably because you didn't treat them right.

*Granted, that pretty much describes my reaction to the whole book. I've known for a long time that I'm a character-oriented reader (I mean, one doesn't read "boy meets boy; they fall in love" a thousand times if one is mainly interested in intricate plots), but there's nothing like reading a 400 page book with ZERO characters I like to really drive this home for me.
