1. Found a wonderful way to fix the hideous new LJ comments (start here), which works beautifully on my computer at home, but of course I can install neither Stylish nor Greasemonkey on my ancient version of Firefox at work. /sighhhhh

2. We figured out our mice were going into the silverware drawer because that was the only one they could get into. (They would smell the food in the other drawers and keep trying, but couldn't get to them, I think.) Traps were set, two mice caught. RIP, mice. May you find bounteous peanut butter and run freely in the ceilings and drawers of mouse heaven.

Let this work. Because seriously, 75 yen to the dollar is freaking KILLING me. I'm not asking for the moon, it doesn't need to go back up to 130 or anything, but please, somewhere around 100? Exchange Rate Gods, are you listening?

Speaking of very expensive yen-based merchandise )

1. Sekaiichi Hatsukoi (obviously) - so far I'm loving it, though the compete cutting out of sex sort of makes me roll my eyes. In the first episode, it's obvious that something happened, and coupled with Ritsu's beer-induced amnesia,* I thought it worked pretty well. [Though Crunchyroll's translation of the "sempai" line as "Saga" failed utterly for me.] But the second episode was like...they had sex there, right? I had to go look at my manga to make sure.

*[ profile] collarnojutsu, I don't know if you remember this, but we once had a conversation about Ritsu being in denial, and I said there was one specific example where he was actively trying to not remember something. I was talking about this episode, and please also see a line early in the second episode.

Next episode will be Chiaki. :/

2. Hunter x Hunter remake - It seems to me like this version is moving a lot faster than the original. (Which is OK, because I found some of the filler in the original a little tiresome.) The new cast is REALLY weirding me out, though. Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio's actors all seem to be doing their best to imitate the original actors. They do a pretty good job, although it was obvious to me right away that it was a new cast. (Really, really miss Takeuchi Junko as Gon.) When we meet Hisoka and Killua, though, they sound COMPLETELY different, which is even more disorienting. I wish they had gone all or nothing with trying to match the original cast.

To be honest, though, I'm still not sure what the POINT of this remake is. Surely the original isn't so old that we can't watch it anymore? It's just strange.

3. Chihayafuru - This is like Hikaru no Go, only with karuta. And the main character is a girl. And I think there's a love triangle? OK, so not really that much like Hikaru no Go, but you guys it is so rad when Arata throws the cards so hard they end up embedded in a wall. The characters are really fun, too, although Taichi is as annoying as all get-out. (Hopefully he gets better, I don't know.) But Chihaya is hilarious and Arata is adorable and I sort of love the big teddy bear dude who runs the local karuta club.

Anybody else watching something worth checking out?

Hey, lookit that! That's the Sekaiichi Hatsukoi opening song, on my iphone. (With the correct album art!) Remember when I was complaining that you can't download songs from iTunes Japan? It turns out you can, it's just a little tricky.

Is it bad that I want to read this just because of the title?

re: Sekaiichi Hatsukoi - so, the anime did not make me like Chiaki. (I do think the voice actors' performances and the facial expressions of the characters helped me hate the episode less than the novel. But that's not saying much.) Also, I finished the second novel, which only confirmed my dislike.

THINGS I HATE, in no particular order:

1. "Jeez, Tori, why are you always so jealous of the guy who's constantly hitting on me? Don't be so possessive! PS I'm going on an overnight onsen trip with him on the day that I forgot is my birthday. Hope you didn't have any plans for us, even though you always do something awesome for my birthday and I never do anything for yours!"

A. That level of cluelessness is not cute, or funny, it's just annoying. How dumb do you have to be to not realize someone likes you when they are constantly asking to draw you nude? TAKE A HINT

B. When Chiaki was thinking about how Hatori always gives him some super awesome present for his birthday, and he hasn't done anything for Hatori since they were in college (what is that, almost 10 years ago??), just...UGH. THAT IS FUCKING TERRIBLE. CHIAKI, YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PERSON.

2. As far as I can tell, Chiaki likes two things about Hatori: that he's crazy about Chiaki (WHY), and that he cooks really good food. Like, to the point that when Hatori says he can't come and see Chiaki for a while because he's busy with work, Chiaki thinks, "Aww, that means I can't eat his food." A relationship where one character is DEVOTED to the other, does EVERYTHING for him, is crazy about him, etc, and the other character is like, "Meh, he makes good food" is not romantic AT ALL and not enjoyable for me to read about. I get that some girls want the fantasy of a boyfriend who is perfect and will love them no matter how much of a screw-up they are (or think they are), and that's fine, but dude, I would hope that in said fantasy you would LOVE YOUR BOYFRIEND BACK, JEEZ.

Once in a while Chiaki wonders what Hatori sees in him, and I seriously wish he would ask, because I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW, TOO, WTF. Though no doubt Hatori's answer would be "everything" or some shit, ugh.

Note found on my windshield yesterday when I left work:

"Hi! Please consider pulling all the way up to the car in front of you to create more parking! Thx!"

Well, since that would mean me parking in a completely different location (nearest car in front of me when I get to work is like 100 feet away), I'm not so much inclined to do that. I am thinking about leaving a note on my car for a couple days that says "To whoever left me a note the other day: Hi! If you don't like where I park, maybe YOU should consider getting here at 7:30, like I do. 'Thx!' PS Do you even know how parallel parking works?"

Ugh, people.

Bag It was on PBS last weekend; it was a really great movie. Informative (sometimes depressingly so) but also really entertaining. I've been trying to cut down on plastic lately (inspired by My Plastic-free Life), and it's pretty frustrating how ubiquitous it's become. It's just impossible to get away from it sometimes. Ugh. Anyway, next up is the book Plastic: A Toxic Love Story, which I've heard is also really good. (But it's checked out right now at my library, so I'll have to wait a bit.)

In fannish news, I was checking the release date on the OP/ED singles for Sekaiichi Hatsukoi the other day (PS I really wish I could buy these songs from iTunes so I don't have to forever own CDs that I will rip onto my computer and then never touch again), I noticed that they're going to release character songs. Really, character songs? That seems so 90s. Or...something. I dunno. Seems strange. But I guess each of the POV characters (Ritsu, Chiaki, Kisa) is going to have one.

Speaking of Chiaki, they're doing another super-special LE version of the manga (vol. 6) that comes with a DVD, which will be a Chiaki episode. Bummer, since I saw the flier that there would be an episode 12.5 and was like YAY and then saw that it would be Chiaki, sigh. Since the next episode of the TV series is also Chiaki, I decided to give the novels another chance and am actually reading volume 2, which I think I got about two years ago. No, I just checked, it came out in 2008. Anyway, I will try to be more patient with this one; I think loving the manga so much made the first novel extra disappointing, so maybe going in with lower expectations will help? (If I WANT to like it badly enough, can I make it happen?)

ETA: This was the 7:30 funny news bite on NPR this morning. I'm kind of sad because I've never seen this car, even though I drive by WMU's campus every day.
wednesday_10_00: (Rainbow Dash - chillin')
80 degrees outside today and what did I do? File my taxes.

In other news:

The set design for the Otome-bu Emerald Editing Department made me laugh so hard. There are some things that are just not as effective in a black and white manga, I guess. Overall, I liked the first episode more than I thought I would--I forgot a lot of what happened at the beginning of the series. Like, what made Takano recognize Ritsu was that he said he'd read all the books in the library at school? lol, they are such NERDS. ♥ ♥ ♥ I think this series is one of those where the beginning is more fun when you have the knowledge of later events. (And/or earlier events, as the case may be. Later flashbacks? Whatever you want to call it.)

I see from the OP that the anime, not unexpectedly, is going to cover all three couples, which...meh. Kisa and Yukina are OK, I guess, and I can't imagine that there could be more than an episode or two about them, but Hatori and Chiaki... :/ I guess if nothing else it'll be interesting to see if the animation staff can squeeze any humor out of Fujisaki's bland (? What's the opposite of "funny"?) prose. Heck, maybe without said prose I'll even LIKE them.

It could happen. Maybe.
