January manga (week 2)
Kind of a light week, since my December magazines finally arrived. (PS - BK1 ended their magazine subscription service. MAGAZINE PANIKKU)
Oyaji na! - Hiiragi Nozomu (heh)
Due to some sort of chemical accident, all the high school girls in Tokyo are turned into middle-aged men, hilarity ensues. The main characters in this volume are Chinatsu (who has a thing for middle-aged men with mustaches) and Tomoe (who has a thing for Chinatsu). There's a lot of relationship drama with the supporting cast, too, though a surprising amount of that concerns boys. Uh, by which I mean actual boys, not girls who look like boys. At first I was like, "is that allowed?" but really, when going into a story about girls who turn into boys, it's probably best to not have any expectations about what sort of characters will pair up. Looking forward to the next volume because I think I liked the supporting characters better than the main characters. (In the end, didn't Chinatsu like Tomoe just because of her new oyajified appearance? I wanted better for Tomoe.)
Seinen wa Ai wo Kou - Hino Garasu (heh)
1. Kaede is gay, but hides it (and his feelings for his friend, Okuda) from everyone at school. Woe, angst, etc.
2. Yoshizaki, an aspiring photographer, is asked by some friends to film a gay porno. It turns out he went to high school with one of the guys going to be in it, named Hagino. Horrified, Yoshizaki drags Hagino away from the porn shoot, and ends up taking him back to his apartment when he finds out Hagino doesn't have a place to stay.
The first story is just OK. Good for when you're in the mood for a story with some serious mutual pining, since Kaede and Okuda have been in love with each other and hiding it for years. But for me, the parts from Kaede's POV are maybe a little too angsty, and there needs to be a little more happiness when they get together at the end. (A one page extra? That's it?) The second story I liked a lot better because Hagino is kind of hilarious. It's sort of strange though, because after he and Yoshizaki get together, Hagino has all this worry about loving Yoshizaki more than Yoshizaki loves him, and how they can never have kids, etc etc, and the story just sort of...ends without any closure to his angst. But when they're cute, they're REALLY cute. Love love love Yoshizaki being stuck at work and having to recharge for an all-nighter by looking at silly pictures of Hagino on his cell phone.
Miracle da to ka Koi da to ka - Hirakita Yuya (heh)
Short story collection. The stories are all really cute and I like them, though I'm not sure any of them stand out as "you must read this!" Maybe the title story, about two high school boys, one who has troubles at home and an adorable little brother, and the other who gets ridiculously carried away (in the "oh crap, I totally didn't mean to kiss you just now!" kind of way). Really wished it was longer, though.
Mukuwaretai na - Hirakita Yuya (sweh...)
Tatsuhiko has been really close to his older cousin Atsumori since they were little and, um...look, there really isn't a plot here. These two guys are hopelessly in love. Tatsuhiko is clueless, then he figures it out, and then they get together, the end. For me, the pining in the first 2/3 or so is more successful than Seinen wa Ai wo Kou because there's less angst and more of the characters being adorable together. Lots of Atsumori facepalming because Tatsuhiko is SO CUTE Atsumori doesn't know what to do with himself, and even more flashbacks to them as ridiculously cute kids. I did not have a OMG THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER type reaction, but it's really adorable and well worth rereading.
Kawaii Anata ni Amai Wana - Honjou Rie (meh)
Short story collection. The first two stories were OK, but nothing special. (I did like the uncle and nephew--not a couple--and their stoic love of sweets, and the nephew has a friend--not a guy with a crush on him, but an actual friend!--that I really liked, but everything else about the stories was kinda meh.) The story about the alien wanting to get pregnant was weird but kinda cute. The last story about the guys in prison was annoyingly predictable and just plain yucky. (Really, can we PLEASE keep the mother-killing out of BL?)
Yesterday I went to Mitsuwa with
mereflair and her husband, and came back with 15 volumes of Chihayafuru. So...probably no reviews next week.
