Junai Romantica 1

A couple weeks ago I mentioned posting scans from the Junai Romantica novels. Here's the first one; I've translated the manga portions and summarized the novel portions. As far as the summary goes, I'm mostly doing it from memory and it's been a while since I read this, so bear with me if I mix up a few details here and there. (Also, it's a little weird for me because I'm in the middle of reading book 5. Hopefully I don't get them mixed up or anything.) This, uh, takes a bit of time to do, so don't expect the next one tomorrow or anything, but I do plan on getting to all of them. Why am I doing this and not translating Flesh & Blood

Also, apologies for the crappiness of the scans. I forgot to put a blank piece of paper in between the pages to keep the text from bleeding through to the other side, and then was too lazy to scan again. orz

[Urg. I love Nakamura-sensei to death, but I hate, HATE the way she draws tongues. *shudder*]

Junai Romantica Prologue

Misaki: Okay then...

M: Next I have to vacuum...

I'm Takahashi Misaki (18), a first year economics student at M University.

Due to circumstances of my brother's job, I'm living in Usagi-san's home.

M: This place is so uselessly big, it's a real pain.

My rent is to do the household chores.

"Usagi-san" is the owner of this house, the popular Naomori Prize-winning author.

He also happens to be a friend of my brother's since high school. Small world, huh?

But what's really funny is...

Usagi-san's background:

1. Second son of the former financial conglomerate, the Usami Group.

2. Was born in England and lived there until the age of ten.

3. Aced his entrance exam and graduated top of his class at T University's Law School.

4. Is 28 and lives in a 5LSDK1 penthouse apartment in the most expensive area of Tokyo.

5. Owns a red sports car.

6. Has a long-haired dog at his parents' home.

7. Doesn't get along with his parents or brother and seems detached, but actually is lonely.

M: It's gotta be a story.

...So you would think, but, amazingly, it's all true.

M: He should just take the story and run with it.

1. 5LSDK = An apartment (or condo) with five bedrooms, plus a living room, stairs, dining room and kitchen.

And there's one more thing.

SFX: vmmmm

This super-tentei's2 little secret.

Book: Akikawa Yayoi; Junai Romantica

M: (Gah.) Another BL novel. How many does that make this year? (What's with this frenzy?)

Usagi-san secretly(?) writes BL novels, too.

M: Is this a new series? I don't recognize the title.

WHY DO I KNOW THESE LITTLE DETAILS???

Arrow: Unconsciously keeps up with them

2.Tentei: Purposeful mispronunciation of "sensei" (a term of respect for authors) to show...well, lack of respect.

M: ...Oh well.

M: He's doing it because he likes it. Whatever.

SFX: vmmmmm

SFX: *running footsteps*

SFX: grab

Book: Akihiko x Misaki kissy scene

M: That damn Usagi, he wrote about ME again...

M: Shit, I hate reading these kinds of books...

M: But I want to know what's written about me...

(M: Shit. Shit! Why me...)

And so...

Junai Romantica: Meeting

Suzuki Misaki's brother, Hirotaka, takes him to meet Toudou Akihiko, an old friend of Hirotaka's, because Misaki needs tutoring to get into college. Akihiko used to come to the Suzuki house after school quite often, when Misaki was just a wee tyke. Misaki has admired him since then...and as he's grown older, his admiration has grown into something more. They haven't met since Misaki was in middle school, plus Akihiko is now a famous author, so Misaki is very nervous to meet him.

Hirotaka leaves and Misaki and Akihiko settle down to talk about Misaki's grades. Misaki is awful in pretty much every subject, but the generous and kind Akihko is sure Misaki will be able to pass his exams with some hard work. Misaki and Akihiko's fingers touch while both trying to grab the sugar bowl, and Misaki bunpms his tea cup and gets hot tea on his fingers. His fingers aren't burned, but Akihiko kisses them...as a "charm" to keep the fingers from getting injured.

During the next few weeks, Misaki comes to the conclusion that Hirotaka and Akihiko are in love with each other, though neither seems to know how the other feels clearly because they're both smarter than Misaki. This depresses Miskai horribly because he wants both Akihiko and his brother to be happy, but can't help feeling jealous. When he sees the two of them coming back from what seems to be a date (Hirotaka had something important to tell Akihiko, which Misaki assumes is his confession of love) and looking really happy, Misaki thinks they've gotten together and feels worse than ever.

When he goes to Akihiko's house the next day for his tutoring session, Misaki can't hide his pain and starts to cry. Akihiko won't leave Misaki alone until he finds out what's the matter, so Misaki admits that it's a broken heart. When Akihiko asks about the "woman," Misaki lets slip that it's a man he's in love with. Akihiko takes this opportunity to say he's suffering from a broken heart also...maybe they should comfort each other? Akihiko (rather forcefully) suggests they go out, and seals the deal with a kiss...um, and some sex.

Misaki wakes up the next day, feeling guilty and regretting what he did. He sneaks out while Akihiko is still sleeping. When he gets home, Hirotaka introduces his new fiancee. Now Misaki understands why Akihiko's heart was broken [or thinks he does, anyway]. The stress and guilt cause Misaki to come down with a fever, and he stays home sick the next day. Akihiko comes to talk to him, but Misaki won't let him in. So, yelling through the door, Akihiko tries to tell him something [*cough*Iloveyou*cough*], but Misaki won't listen.

On the first day back to school after several days' absence, Misaki finds Akihiko waiting for him outside the school entrance. Akihiko tries to insist that they have a bargain to keep, but Misaki (still appalled at the idea that to Akihiko, he's nothing but a substitute for Hirotaka) says he can't date Akihiko after all, because he started dating the guy he was in love with. Akihiko seems to accept this, but makes Misaki agree to "pretend" they're going out for one day.

Misaki had been saying he wanted to eat Akihiko's omrice [omrice = rice wrapped up in an omlet], so they go to the store to buy the dinner ingredients for their "date." Misaki thinks that they're like a newly married couple, and then is surprised when Akihiko makes a comment to the same effect.

They go back to Akihiko's apartment and he completely pampers Misaki; giving him dinner, a hot bath, drying his hair, trimming his nails...then he suggests they go to bed, since they are pretending to be lovers, right? [And he thinks Misaki's new boyfriend wouldn't mind...?? Oh, whatever.] Misaki agrees, but when Akihiko says "I love you," Misaki shoves him away, saying that he can't stand being a substitute for his brother anymore. Akihiko is all, "What are you talking about, I'm in love with YOU" and since Misaki feels the same, they have hot bad romance novel sex.

In the end, Misaki passes his entrance exams, and since Hirotaka moves to Osaka, Misaki moves in with Akihiko.

Chapter 2: Onsen

Misaki gets a postcard from a friend on vacation and wishes that he could go on vacation too, preferably with Akihiko. Akihiko hears Misaki's sigh and makes him say what's on his mind...and then is completely charmed by the answer.

In the end, they do book a vacation to an onsen [hot spring] in Hokkaido. There's a bunch of angsty stuff because (as it turns out) Misaki's parents are moving back to Tokyo and want him to move in with them. Akihiko didn't tell Misaki because he didn't want it to spoil their vacation, but then Misaki gets a call from his dad. Akihiko thinks Misaki should move in with them, because family is important, but Misaki is horrified, because in his brain, "Akihiko-san wants me to move out" = "Akihiko-san is tired of me and wants to break up." Misaki starts yelling about Akihiko getting sick of him and why did you bring me on this trip, etc etc, until finally he says, "Fine, let's break up, then!" Akihiko, like any respectable(?) bad romance novel seme, promptly ties Misaki up and has his wicked way with him.

In the middle of the night, Misaki wakes up and sneaks out of the hotel room. He runs off to his parents' place and spends the next day feeling awful. As he's going to bed that night, he notices that he forgot to turn on his cell phone after he got off the plane. As soon as he turns it on, the phone rings; it's Akihiko, of course. Akihiko assures Misaki that he doesn't want to break up, etc, and Misaki rushes back to Tokyo for make-up sex.

Akihiko somehow convinces Misaki's parents to let them live together, and our heroes are happy again.
