Thank you! <3 Oh dear, I see many things here I don't recognize, in addition to the things I already have on my list for Japan. I will never, ever catch up.

(I was about to ask about your April order, then I saw the comment about the every-other-month experiment. Duh.)

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2010-05-25 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
re: unrecognized titles - I do try to get something "experimental" in every order. I get a lot of duds, but there's some really good stuff to be found that way, too. (I prefer to experiment by actual browsing in actual bookstores, but you take what you can get, I guess.)

I will never, ever catch up.

I was going to say something upbeat and encouraging, but instead, my true feelings: mwa ha ha ha ha!

Magazines? Does Amazon ship magazines? Or was that reference just to confuse me? Why would you want to confuse me?

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2010-05-25 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Amazon does indeed ship magazines; unlike BK1 (which offers only subscriptions), at Amazon you can buy single issues until they run out. (Single magazine issues that could be placed in any order was the main reason I stuck with Amazon for so long, despite BK1's cheaper shipping.) However, I am currently placing orders through Mangaoh (which also sells magazines, though they only stock each issue until the next is released). So I guess maybe the reference did confuse you; I only meant that I looked up the release date on Amazon and they totally lied about it. those liars, with their pants on fire

[identity profile] skeleton-rust.livejournal.com 2010-05-25 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you buying ALL of this?? Holy crap o_o

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2010-05-25 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, yes. (Sadder still, I used to average 15 books/month, so for this to be two months' worth is actually cutting back.)

I buy from Mangaoh (http://www.mangaoh.co.jp/), though if I weren't hopelessly addicted to magazines, I'd go with BK1 (http://www.bk1.jp/).

[identity profile] sara-tanaquil.livejournal.com 2010-05-25 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think I was recently on bk1, and discovered that they do sell single issues of magazines now (a very new development, they didn't used to). Very sadly, they don't appear to offer Ciel TresTres. But I'm thinking of using them as my magazine source more often now.

My current pet peeve with bk1 is that they're extremely slow to process billing. I've had charges show up on my credit card as much as six weeks later, which is really kind of ridiculous -- it makes it hard to budget when I can only ballpark what the exchange rate will come out to. I keep defaulting back to Amazon for their fast shipping.

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2010-05-25 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh, cool! Just after I wrote that, I wondered if it had changed. Good to know (especially if I want to cut back on the manga budget once I have my own place).

Gah, six weeks! That would be annoying. I've had Mangaoh be a couple weeks late, but usually it's at least the same month. (It's going to be strange if this order goes through at the beginning of June--will it only be a couple weeks before billing, or will it not be until the end of June?)

it makes it hard to budget when I can only ballpark what the exchange rate will come out to

If it were me, I'd estimate high and let the rest roll over to the next month. (I try to do that with my manga/books budget anyway, though it doesn't always work.)

[identity profile] skeleton-rust.livejournal.com 2010-05-25 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
By the why who do you purchase from? Amazon.jp or jpqueen?

[identity profile] collarnojutsu.livejournal.com 2010-05-26 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
You know how much MORE bitter this post is for me now, right? *sob*

是 -ZE-(9) 志水ゆき / Ze (Shimizu Yuki)
恋愛操作(3) 蓮川愛 / Renai Control 3 (Hasukawa Ai) [omg finally]

Is that Ze #9? 9, wow! I didn't think it was that long. Also, jealousy over Renai Control. I'll bet we never see these over here at this rate. Any others I should recognize but don't at the moment? (lol i can't read japanese, yo.)

Also: I wanted to go get The White Road today, but Borders hadn't unpacked it yet. (I KNOW they have it; that's how laydown dates work. They've been there for weeks, in a box in the corner.) The guy basically said as much, but when I said "so I'll just come tomorrow, then?" he responded with "well, it might not be unpacked yet, might be the day after..." Seriously, Borders can't staff the place enough on a release Tuesday to get the new books changed out? SERIOUSLY? I know they have no money for staff, but it's not like they can sell books they haven't unpacked, either. Anyway, so I said well, if it's tomorrow, I'll be there, and if it's the day after you've just lost a sale, cuz the book came out today and I'm sure it's been unpacked somewhere else. Anyway, that's my log story to say I probably won't get TWR until after the weekend at this rate, but I guess it's ok, because it's not like I was going to be reading it at AZ anyway. :/

Good luck waiting for your shipment, anyway! :)

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2010-05-26 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that Ze #9?

Yep. I think the only things of note in this order are a Suzuki Tsuta title (just 'cause we've been talking about her, though I have no idea if this one will be any good or not) and Usagi Otoko to Tora Otoko (the tiger and bunny one).

re: TWR - Gah, I had a hard time getting my copy, too! I was at B&N, and had two people looking all over the store, in every paperback display (because the computer listed it as being in a "triangle"), and one of the guys finally found it after the second trip to check the back. (I wonder if he unpacked it for me?) Like, seriously? Why is this so hard, guys? (And the REALLY stupid thing was, they had all the old Nightrunner books displayed on the "new SF/F" shelf. WTF?)

bookstore know-it-all

(And the REALLY stupid thing was, they had all the old Nightrunner books displayed on the "new SF/F" shelf. WTF?)

That's because the new book was coming out; they stock displays with backlist to get people interested/make them pick up all the other books, too.

Going to the back room a second time suggests to me that, while it WAS unpacked, it was in the area devoted to new releases/strict-on-sales and the person(s) looking for it probably just looked at the scifi/fantasy shelving area initially. Once they figured out it was a new release, they probably went to look in that area and found they hadn't been brought out yet.

I'd wager that this tuesday, being the weekend before memorial day holiday and the official start of "summer season", the laydown/strict on sale list was HUGE. Given the state of bookstores these days (economically speaking), I'm not surprised the stores didn't have stuff out, but it's the sort of task that bookstores, in a day gone by, would have made sure to have the staff to cover -- and it'd been done first thing in the morning. Back in the day at B&N, we had a specific person in "charge" of new releases just for this purpose of selling brand new stuff RIGHT AWAY for the rabid fans.

/boring behind-the-scenes at a bookstore comment. (I can't help it.)

No, I get that. I just meant that it was stupid of them to be proactive enough to have the old books out on display and then not have the new book out on time. (Though I did think it was strange that the first three books were on the new shelf, and Shadows Return was on the regular shelf, but oh well.)

Once they figured out it was a new release

He did know it was a new release from the start, though; I heard the girl who was first helping me tell him it was supposed to be out that day.

(I don't find your behind-the-scenes info boring at all!)

Then he should have looked in all relevant places from the start! :P (Easy conjecture on my/our part - we weren't back there, ha ha.) Of course, you're totally supposed to look *everywhere* before you tell the customer no!

(good thing, because I am full of boring bookstore knowledge!) ♥

TBH, I almost laughed when they offered to look in the back because of this (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/11/27/). I was like, "what, you're going for a smoke?"

That is my new favorite thing for the next 30 seconds.

The Ze fanbook is totally worth the money, btw!

Awesome, good to know! Normally I'm not too excited about fanbooks/guidebooks, but I thought the description of this one made it look like it was worth getting. XD

New Nightrunner today!

Due to how disappointed I was with the last one, I am counting on my friends to pre-screen the new one for me before I buy it. If they spend over 50% of the book apart and/or arguing with each other, please warn me.

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you'll like it a lot better than the last one. It's a lot more in the style of the first two books (i.e. the boys running around adventuring, and (amazing!) sometimes actually using their nightrunning skills). There's a...difference of opinion or two (I wouldn't really call them arguments), but nothing that lingers, and through the whole book, I'd say Seregil and Alec don't spend more than a few hours apart.

[identity profile] spacealien-vamp.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, that helps.

[identity profile] momiji-mii.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
Anata no tame nara Doko made mo is really amazing. I hope you'll love it even a fraction of what I did, because if you do, you'll be blown away. It's just so incredibly over the top and, ultimately, brilliant. ^^

As for Work In, I'm on the fence on what I tought about that one, but I suppose I liked it well enough. Sangen Tonari no Tooi Hito is probably the only one of her comics that I really liked so far. Suzuki Tsuta's one of those really uneven authors where I love some of their stuff a lot, while most of it I really don't get.

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, I'm so looking forward to this order! (I wish it would ship already...)

I kinda know what you mean about Suzuki Tsuta, but I usually find something I like in all of her books, so I figured I'd give it a chance. I haven't heard anything amazing about Work in, so if I do like it, I guess it'll be a pleasant surprise, but I'm not expecting much.
