FIV+ cats can live a long time, right? Maybe it wouldn't be so bad, adopting them? Though I guess that would kind of put you in an endless cycle...

My cat of a few years ago came down with FIV after I moved to NC (another reason to hate this place), and when I eventually found out, I was told he would not live more than 6 more months. He went on to live 3+ more years. He died at age 20. They expected him to die of kidney failure before the FIV, but in the end it was a tumor of some kind. He didn't have it his whole life, but, even in an elderly state he did hang on incredibly. I suspect it just depends, kind of like with people. :( My 2nd cat at the time never did contract FIV from him (miracle of miracles) but because of the FIV possibility, was unable to adopt again until the first died and the second was on his way... :(

I think it's really noble to adopt ill cats (and as one can see, sometimes they do live quite a while), but they do get expensive when symptoms present, and it's pretty sad if you're the kind of person who really gets attached. (Which seems like a pre-requisite for adopting a sick animal anyway?) *sniffle* Sick animals make me sad.
