Too many books

I can't see how I have any hope of reviewing the massive pile of manga I brought back from Japan, so I will have to think of a different way of doing things. Tonight's experiment:
Random Scans of Things That Cracked Me Up

Sand moai!? I laughed SO hard when I saw this. Unfortunately, that was pretty much the highlight of Yappari Koi no Sei. There were a couple funny moments, but the main characters didn't do much for me. (Or, rather, I liked the uke okay, but disliked the seme, to the point that I wished the uke would go off and find somebody better.) The secondary couple might have made up for it...if they'd had more screen time.

Bunny sweater Phoenix. BUNNY SWEATER PHOENIX. So, despite Phoenix's increasingly dorky clothes, the Gyakuten Saiban manga is fun...but not nearly as much fun as the games. First of all, Edgeworth is really only in volume 2, a major disappointment for me, especially since he's so amazing when he is around that it makes it seem even worse when he's not. (Steel Samurai manjuu, hee!) Also, I feel like the humor is kind of lacking (in the courtroom especially), which leaves big chunks of the manga kind of boring. I mean, no humor, no solving the mystery, no plot...what's left?

As a side note, I can accept that the manga takes place outside the game timeline; it's sort of necessary in order to have Edgeworth and Franziska as prosecutors without a long explanation of why they're back in LA Japan. But. BUT. What's with Phoenix's "Wow, that girl is cute, she looks like my old college girlfriend!" comment? (With a picture of Iris, just in case we think he might have ever had another girlfriend.) I'M CONFUSED.

One of these days I might actually finish my report on my Japan trip. (Be afraid. It's long! Very long!)

I'm looking forward to the report!

Also, I demand to know the outcome of the Quest Manga. Is it good?

If I can get my act together (=pick my manga up off the living room floor), I will write my January Review tomorrow.

Umm....I dunno. I had mixed feelings after I finished Quest Manga, I felt like I needed to read it again before I was sure. I will write about it later, though, thanks for reminding me.

LOL sand moai (and I'm glad you added the helpful circle, because I would have completely missed it). I... didn't buy this one, did I? (The post-Japan pile is current a vast miasma in my living room.)

My current Japanese reading seems to consist of playing Phoenix Wright in Japanese. I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad. One of the interesting side effects is, I'm currently playing each segment through in Japanese, then in English. When I'm playing in Japanese, I feel like there are a million things I don't understand, but as soon as I play through in English, I realize that I actually didn't miss anything of importance. The stuff I'm missing tends to be irrelevant descriptive detail. I know you guys have been telling me for years to ignore the stuff I don't understand, but it's interesting to see that principle graphically illustrated. So to speak. I think this might give me more confidence to read manga and just ignore the parts I'm not getting.

P.S. I recommend the cat toy method. This involves throwing a cat toy at the pile, and recommending whatever it lands on.

P.S.S. Japan report please!! You were the keeper of the official timeline...

I don't think you bought the sand moai, no. I found it by chance at the used store in Kyoto and bought it because it's by the author of Sweetish Happiness, which I love.

I'm glad that PW is teaching you what we could not. (How far are you now?)

P.S. The cat toy method won't really work for me as I stuck all the Japan manga into some boxes to clean up my room a little.

How far are you now?

I just started the trial in PW2.2 and met Franziska. (She's hilarious! I think the judge is a sub.) In the Japanese version, btw, it appears she was raised in America, not Germany (her name in Japanese is Karuma Mei). I'm trying to figure out (without going on websites and scaring up too many spoilers) if there is any indication in the Japanese game of the Karma family having any connection to Germany at all... it's just really weird to think of it not being there, when it seems to have become such a big part of the American fanfic scene.

I don't know HOW I'm going to find time to play through the games and blog about the difference between the American and Japanese versions, but I'd like to, because it's really fascinating. They did an excellent job with the conversion, but some of the differences are pretty significant.

Franziska! ♥ ♥ ♥ She's totally one of my favorite characters. (Why are the prosecutors all so awesome?) As far as I know, the Germany thing was just competely made up for the American version. (Do the game creators think Americans really like to wear lots of ruffles?)

I say just blog about the differences you find whenever you like and don't worry about the countdown to AJ schedule.

Unfortunately, I can't hear you because you haven't submitted a Japan report.

whine, whine, whine

If you want to see it so bad, I'll send you my current version and you can edit it into someting readable. :P

piffle. I didn't even edit mine into anything readable.

Remember how you were surprised [livejournal.com profile] collarnojutsu read your whole report because it was so long? Mine is like twice as long. Not to mention so boring it makes your eyes glaze over a third of the way through. -_-;;

Hey hey, but I'm a glutton for punishment, remember! POST YOUR DAMNED REPORT. (So that I may have one last weep in jealousy.)

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE

I'm not saying I'm not going to post it; I just need to do some editing first.

There is a Gyakuten manga?? @_@ Oh lord must check it out! <33 I skipped the thrid game and jumped the forth one.... not a good move, now I'm massively spoiled. ;_;

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, three volumes and still running.

Does the fourth game even talk about events in the third game? I wouldn't think it would spoil you that much. I noticed that in the third game they would skirt around spoilers for the first two, even when things were directly related.

[identity profile] don-amoeba.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I can't tell if the events in the fourth game is directly related to the third one, but there are some MAJOR CHANGES (given, it's "Apollo Justice" and set years after Phoenix Wright) and the first chapter keeps talking about something that happened BEFORE, so I assume the incident is from the third game, more maybe there will be flashback chapter in the forth game, I'm not too sure. I'm playing it in Japanese now but I can't wait for the English version to come out! :P

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. There are a lot of references to a mysterious past in the first game, too, so it might just be that kind of thing. I don't know a whole lot about the fourth game (I'm trying to avoid spoilers), but my guess is if it's about an old girlfriend of Phoenix's, it's from the third game. If not, it's something else.

[identity profile] don-amoeba.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it must be a fourth game original plot then. But still, I don't think I can go back and play the third game without looking at it differently. ;_; Thanks for the tip (Phoenix had a girlfriend?!? Isn't Edgey the love of his life?? XDD)!

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know how you feel...I don't know all the circumstances exactly, but I'm sad about Phoenix becoming a hobo. :/ I'm worried that I'm going to have a hard time getting past that to enjoy the rest of the game (At least I know Ema's in it. I LOVE Ema.), and how I'm going to feel about the series in general. Eh, we'll see. (Soon! Very soon!)

Of course Edgey is the love of Phoenix's life, but there were all those years they didn't talk to each other. You can hardly expect Phoenix to not at least TRY to see someone else. XD

[identity profile] don-amoeba.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE EMA TOO! Although her personality has changed a bit... I wish they'd take her more seriously. And there's this "read people" new game play that I just don't get... I NEED to get the English version, it feels so weird playing the game where everyone has different names.

Whippersnapper! I refuse to beleive that! XDD
